Finding Balance during Changing Times

In the Northern Hemisphere we’ve begun the Autumn Season; my second favorite season highlighting nature’s profound, beautiful changes. Seeds of intention were planted at the start of the year, cultivated during the Spring. Some of us enjoyed succulent Summer Fruits, while others look forward to the Autumn Harvest.

Autumn is also a season of letting go. In the same way that trees begin to change creating an awesome array of colorful foliage that eventually falls…red, gold, orange, yellow maple and oak leaves carpeting the earth, we too must let go.

Therefore, as you reflect on this quickly passing year:

  • What intentions have borne fruit, providing joy and satisfaction in our life, family, business or community?
  • In what ways have you adjusted to the unexpected, the surprises or losses?
  • How are you preparing to let go; particularly those people or things that do not serve, nurture or fulfill you?

Change is essential for growth. If we are to grow, we can learn to go with the flow, allowing the lessons along the way to strengthen us. No matter the season or weather of our daily lives, we may sway, climb, dive, bend…If we lose a branch or two in the winds of change, we know that new growth is taking place.

Balancing Actions

Although we’ve officially passed the Autumn Equinox, its still important to acknowledge balance between the feminine and masculine, the sun and moon, movement and stillness…

Therefore, make these 5 self-care & soul-care practices a priority:

  1. Maintain alignment, balance and coherence in BodyMindSpirit through exercise, sound nutrition and proper rest.
  2. Ensure that your external environment supports healthy boundaries by avoiding clutter; maintain order and organization.
  3. Take regular refresh breaks away from your computer to move your body, breathe fresh air outdoors and get a different perspective. You’ll be more clear-headed and more productive when you take refresh breaks to renew yourself.
  4. Learn when and how to say, “No”, “No thank you” or “No, not at this time” without guilt, shame or apology.
  5. Know what you’re responsible for, what’s yours to do and stay in your lane. Avoid trying to do or control anything that is NOT your responsibility, job or task.

Remember, when we take care of ourselves first and model healthy boundaries, we’re better aligned, balanced, focused, enabling us to serve and share our gifts with the world from an ever-flowing wellspring of optimal BodyMindSpirit health and well-being.

Enjoy this season in balance, wholeness and joy!  

Changing Times, Changing Perspectives, Changing Lives

Change is always happening. However, over several years, change has been deepening, accelerating and intensifying. These “shocks” to our humanity and our environment are unsettling.

As a consequence, my emotions have been cycling from rage, resignation to deep sadness. It’s been essential to feel the feelings before I could accept that the extremes of fear, violence and destruction showing up locally and globally, and what’s coming up personally are connected. These inner and outer experiences are also being revealed to be healed. Framing changing conditions in this way has allowed me to accept:

  • Things get worse before they get better
  • This too shall pass

Therefore, change is a matter of perspective, our beliefs and attitudes.

How are you responding to or coping with change?

Besides the ways that you pray or meditate, spending quality time in nature is essential to restore your sense of balance, wonder and appreciation. I have found that when I’m at the ocean, I’m rejuvenated as the waves carry my worries away. If I’m in the forest, the wisdom of the trees renews me.

For some of you, communing with Mother Earth through gardening helps restore a sense of peace, whether it’s cultivating plants, flowers or food. It has actually been therapeutic for me. 

  • Do you take time to revel in nature?
  • When were you recently at the ocean, a lake or waterfall?
  • Where is your favorite nature environment?
  • What is most refreshing for you?

Quality time in community is also especially important at this time. The bonding and connection that occurs from sharing stories, convening ritual and co-creating meaningful actions, as well as collaborating with other groups or communities often provides a safe refuge, and opportunity for mutual support and encouragement.

Another way to cope is to share your time and talent at sites that serve seniors, youth, animals or volunteer at libraries or schools. Volunteering to work on local, state or national campaigns for the upcoming mid-term elections may be a helpful outlet.

How Are You Co-Creating Change?

Change is indeed a matter of perspective. You have the capacity and responsibility to co-create the change, transformation or revolution that you want. I consciously align with my deepest values of freedom, justice and peace from a heart space knowing that:

  • Love is the answer
  • We are truly one
  • Everything comes together for good.

If You’re Not Answering Your Soul’s Calling, Who Is?

In other words, are your expressing your true nature, living your divine purpose, doing what you most love? Your Soul’s Calling is what you’re born to be and do! It energizes, motivates and sustains you…and it lights you up and those with whom you interact. Your Soul’s Calling frees and fulfills you to express your deepest passion with dedication and delight!

From an early age some of you know what you’re here to do. You focus your education, develop your talents, sharpen your skills and pursue your heart’s desire. You want to become the best you and over time become a master, whether an artist, engineer, teacher, firefighter, athlete, doctor, entrepreneur or public office holder. You’re good at what you do and can honestly say, “There is nothing else I’d rather be doing.” Such is the case with the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Steve Jobs, Louise Hay, icons like Steph Curry, Jean Houston, Chadwick Boseman, Joel Olsteen, statesman Ronald V. Dellums, author Danielle Steele, as well as the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai and cellist, Sheku Kanneh-Mason!

Yet others ‘exist’ based on other people’s expectations and allow conditions or circumstances to control who you are and what you do. You put your family or your boss first, perhaps putting your true passion on the back burner. You procrastinate until you vegetate. As a result:

  • You don’t live up to your full potential
  • You experience stress, frustration or even illness
  • You don’t feel purposeful, joyful or fulfilled

You just get by…day to day…year to year with a hole in your soul. Instead of mastery, you settle for mediocrity. Rather than aspire, you expire, like a flower that withers or a light that dims… Ultimately, you’re not happy.

  • Does this describe anyone you know?
  • Who do you want to be when you grow up in consciousness, authenticity and truth?

However, the Creator has a way of getting your attention. Your wake-up call may appear as a serious illness or getting laid off your job. It might appear as an inheritance or the right mentor. Everything changes if you choose to see the wake-up call as an

opportunity to change gears, shift direction and move forward charged up, willing and ready to be what you’re born to be and do!

  • What are you choosing? Magnificence or Mediocrity?
  • What is the vision, dream or passion within you that wants to be expressed?Design

  • How do you feel when you’re doing what you most love?
  • When you come to the end of your earthly existence, how do you want to feel and what do you want others to say about you?

Modifying Our Movement from Resistance to Revolution

For quite some time, I’ve been concerned about ‘resistance efforts’, primarily sparked by what has become daily assaults from Agent Orange 45. Even though ongoing resistance activities, such as petitions, marches and protests, have galvanized people who might not otherwise be as actively or financially involved, the results of the resistance efforts may not currently be as fruitful as desired, although mid-term election wins are encouraging. However, we may still feel restless or discouraged.

On a metaphysical level, “What you resist persists.” – Carl Jung 

“Whatever you fight, you strengthen, and what you resist, persists.” – Eckhart Tolle

 Why is this? When we resist, we tend to keep our consciousness and energy focused on the problem or “evil” we want to stop or end. We may confront, oppose, battle. However, the energy of resistance is gripping, clenching, hardening, increasing tension in the mind and body, sometimes leading to frustration and fatigue, perhaps even burnout.

Your thoughts create your reality. Your reality is the result of your thoughts. 

Therefore, I’m focusing my thoughts and energy on affirming, claiming, envisioning and manifesting what I want. Not only is this perspective and practice fueling a more creative, visionary flow, it just feels better, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Where your energy flows your reality goes.”

I want a positive change, innovation, conversion, transformation, revolution. Revolution is a complete change, fundamental change, radical change. The real revolution begins in the heart with courage, compassion, connection and community to build the new now, with others of like-heart.

A Healthy Mind Leads to a Healthy Life

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. The theme for 2018 is #CureStigma. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, NAMI, one in 5 Americans is affected by mental health conditions. Stigma is toxic to their mental health because it creates an environment of shame, fear, silence that prevents many people from seeking help and treatment. However, stigma is 100% curable with compassion, empathy and understanding.

  • How do you define mental health?
  • What is your response to the term mental illness?
  • Do you have family members or friends who contend with mental health challenges?

There are several definitions of mental health. 1) Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioral and emotional wellbeing – it is all about how we think, feel and behave. Mental health affects daily life, relationships and physical health. It includes a person’s ability to enjoy life – attain a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. And the definition that I prefer: 2) Mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. (World Health Organization)

  • What keeps you functioning optimally in body, mind and spirit? 

Mental Health Challenges

Many factors contribute to mental health challenges:

  • Biological such as genes, brain chemistry or nutrition
  • Hormonal changes
  • Trauma or abuse
  • Environmental factors
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Life-threatening illness
  • Stress (finances, work, relationships)

Note that stress is very common with the most negative effect on your well-being. You’ve been impacted by one or more of these factors at some point in your life. The degree to which you navigate, cope with or overcome these factors influences your overall health and well-being. And whenever you’re unable to effectively handle these challenges; feel angry, depressed, irritable, anxious for a prolonged time, or even suicidal, you can seek support from a friend, counselor, spiritual advisor, health practitioner or doctor. The key is to release any sense of shame, fear or resistance and get help! In my own life, I’ve experienced bouts of depression that have led to hospitalization, out-patient care, prescribed drugs and therapy. Fortunately, I’ve successfully moved through these periods of depression with the loving, non-judgmental, practical support of my birth family, church family and village family. Working with a few sensitive, skilled talk therapists has helped, plus taking prescribed anti-depressants on a short-term basis. Compassionate staff who encouraged me to play with arts and crafts; creative activities was also beneficial. Over time, I’ve learned that spirituality, creativity, community, service, growth and freedom are essential to my health and well-being in body, mind and spirit. The perception of mental illness and the stigma against people with mental health conditions won’t change unless we each act to change it. This is one reason I’m using National Mental Health Awareness Month to share the fact that throughout my adulthood, I’ve dealt with mental health challenges and feel grateful to have received appropriate support, even when I was initially kicking and screaming about it…

Metamorphosis, Memories and Milestones Lessons along the Way…

When I retired from the public service sector, seeking to operate The Wright Resort on a full-time basis, I faced a steep learning curve through unfamiliar terrain; sales, marketing, social media, networking and revenue generation. New terminology, new technologies and new relationships characterized my entry into solo-entrepreneurship.

January 2018 marked 10 years in business full-time, as Director of The Wright Resort, a BodyMindSpirit Wellness Center, dedicated to Social Consciousness and Feminine Leadership to evolve people and the planet. I’m helping creative women career professionals and solo-preneurs use their talents, gifts and skills to fulfill their Soul’s Calling, step into their power and prosper doing what they most love as leaders to transform businesses, workplaces, communities and the world. BodyMindSpirit self-care practices with spiritual activism and conscious action tools are being utilized to support mature women to be and confidently become the change they seek, within themselves and the world. If anyone had told me that being in business for myself was a spiritual journey, and that I was embarking on the next phase of my personal and professional evolution, I would not have initially understood. However, having been tested, stretched, challenged, strengthened and compelled to “grow” in every aspect of my life, I now understand that The Wright Resort has evolved based on my own spiritual and creative evolution, and thus programs and services are flowing from self-care to soul care to social change, incorporating elements of spiritual activism, expressive arts and community building.

Now for a few lessons:

  1. Be authentic, vulnerable, compassionate and loving with yourself and your clients/customers.
  2. Be willing to stretch beyond comfort, familiarity and routine. Be willing to risk new learning, so that you can up-level your skill-set and offerings based on your increased capacity to “grow” your clients/customers.
  3. Be clear about your expertise solving a specific problem that your ideal client is willing to invest in solving. Become recognized as an expert and authority for your unique brilliance.
  4. Be focused on breakthroughs and benefits that you facilitate for and with your ideal clients/customers. Establish fees based on the “value” of the transformation that you facilitate; the methodology is secondary.
  5. Be willing to invest in a support team of paid and volunteer assistants who can handle routine, clerical or project-specific tasks that free you up to share your valuable expertise with clients/customers.
  6. Be open to collaborating with partners whose client base is similar and skill-set is complementary with yours, so that you create a win-win-win arrangement that optimizes value to clients/customers and revenues to you.
  7. Be vigilant about investing in and retaining a coach or mentor that keeps you accountable, stretching and growing, so that you excel beyond self-imposed limitations to be and do the best in highest service to yourself and your clients/customers.

Moving on Up
