I’m drafting this article on Juneteenth with a heavy heart. As you may know, Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved blacks throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States. Since the 1980s and 1990s, the holiday has been more widely celebrated among African-American communities. Organizations such as the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation are working toward gaining Congressional approval to designate Juneteenth as a national day of observance.
Given what Black People in Amerikkka continue to experience; it’s clear that the ideal of freedom, justice and equality for all, is just that, an ideal. Amerikkka has yet to truthfully grapple with its legacy of slavery, a legacy maintained by systems, institutions and practices that perpetuate racism, exploitation, injustice, oppression, incarceration and more…
My work with mature women continues to evolve from self-care to soul care; soul’s calling to social change. As a Coach, Speaker, Author, Change Agent and Metaphysician, I’m passionate about helping women live their purpose, manifest their dreams, fulfill their soul’s calling, and prosper doing what they most love.
May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. The theme for 2018 is #CureStigma. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, NAMI, one in 5 Americans is affected by mental health conditions. Stigma is toxic to their mental health because it creates an environment of shame, fear, silence that prevents many people from seeking help and treatment. However, stigma is 100% curable with compassion, empathy and understanding.
As many of you know, I recently celebrated my birthday. Consequently, I’ve been reflecting on my past and contemplating my future.
Specifically, I’m pondering my relationship with and responsibility to my ancestors. Not only do I stand on their shoulders, in truth I am my ancestors. Thus, these questions come to mind:
- How am I bringing their dreams to fruition?
- In what ways am I taking their triumphs to the next level, or transforming their shortcomings into lessons for guidance and growth?
- How can I be more of what I’ve been created to be?
- In what ways am I paying it forward?
Given where you are in your life, how would you answer these questions?
When I retired from the public service sector, seeking to operate The Wright Resort on a full-time basis, I faced a steep learning curve through unfamiliar terrain; sales, marketing, social media, networking and revenue generation. New terminology, new technologies and new relationships characterized my entry into solo-entrepreneurship.
January 2018 marked 10 years in business full-time, as Director of The Wright Resort, a BodyMindSpirit Wellness Center, dedicated to Social Consciousness and Feminine Leadership to evolve people and the planet. I’m helping creative women career professionals and solo-preneurs use their talents, gifts and skills to fulfill their Soul’s Calling, step into their power and prosper doing what they most love as leaders to transform businesses, workplaces, communities and the world. BodyMindSpirit self-care practices with spiritual activism and conscious action tools are being utilized to support mature women to be and confidently become the change they seek, within themselves and the world. In doing so, they co-create a new paradigm of feminine power and conscious social change.
Despite the unpredictable dramatically changing weather, Spring still remains my favorite time of the year. I love the signs of new life in the fresh buds and fragrant blossoms. I feel the energy of rebirth and renewal that characterizes the season. I celebrate my birth to earth day, April 6, all month!
- What excites you about this season?
- How are you celebrating this time of renewal?
- What are you allowing to be birthed or re-birthed through you?
I’m proud to come from a long lineage of powerful African and African American women trailblazers, movers and shakers, those who have defied the odds, broken the barriers and raised the bar of excellence in every field of endeavor! I’m not only standing on the shoulders of these women but standing shoulder to shoulder with many of them!
For many years I’ve innately understood that the divine feminine power of women; that is women expressing our true nature of birthing, tending, nurturing, cultivating and co-creating is essential to heal the planet.
Now, I embrace this truth even more fervently.
With breakdowns in every sector of society, discord at the highest levels of governance, dysfunction within many of our institutions and systems that are no longer viable; are we choosing exploitation or emancipation? extinction or evolution?
Radical transformation is required to emancipate people and evolve our world. New paradigms of leadership, engagement and community are called for.
The 2018 Oakland Women’s Rally and March was beautiful, inspiring and energizing! It represented a renewed commitment to women’s rights; voting, specifically getting progressive women elected at the local, state and national level; economic equity and environmental justice.
New Year Blessings!
